Shitty Day

I always get depressed this time of year.  Although autumn is my favorite season, I’m never so anxious for it to arrive.  It symbolizes the end of summer, and the possibilities to do all of those things that I wanted to do, but didn’t.

And then I’ve witnessed so many relationship problems in those around me.

Last night, which started out okay but turned out to be completely sucky, there was a young couple sitting near me.  I later found out that she was 23, and he, 26.  He was from Greece, and has been in the States for the last year.  He intends to return home in one month.  She was also Greek, but hasn’t lived there in 15 years.

It was SO obvious that she thinks he hung the moon.  He, on the other hand, was nonplussed by her displays of emotion.  He would play along and certainly kiss her back, but by and large, he wasn’t nearly as into her as she was into him.

I began a conversation with them, and later with her, separate of him.  The first thing she told me was that he plans to move back to Greece in a month, and how he’s leaving her here.  I said that it was so obvious that she was into him.  As it turned out, she knew that he wasn’t as into her.  She said that he doesn’t feel the same way, but that she feels so deeply for him that she’s hoping that he’ll get with the program, and eventually move back here.

Somehow I doubt that will happen.

And then, I was having a conversation with a male friend last night, who informed me that only 2 of the married people that he knows don’t cheat.  WTF???  It sounds like a simple concept, but is it SO impossible to have a monogamous relationship?  And by that I mean that BOTH parties have agreed to be monogamous, and are actually prepared to adhere to the rules of monogamy.

I’m going to take a poll on who cheats and who doesn’t.  Anyone can feel free to leave their answer in the comments below.

New column, and Furry Friends

The new column is about introspective dating.  If more than three people tell you someting about yourself — believe it!  :-)

On another note, a special announcement for Chicagoan pet lovers . . .

It is with great regret that we inform you that the FFF Board of Trustees has decided to close Furry Friends Foundation.  We are making a huge push to adopt out our remaining animals as quickly as possible, while sticking of course to our strict placement policies to ensure the best placement.  If you have been thinking seriously of adopting, NOW IS THE TIME!  Please forward this to your friends, family and colleagues.  We currently have 20 dogs either at the shelter or in foster care that need placement prior to Oct 15th.  Additionally, we have about 85 cats or kittens as well, and a handful of guniea pigs. Please check out our website at www.furryfriendsfoundation.com to read about our available animals, and complete a Guardianship Application ASAP if you are interested!

If you have adopted from us in the past, we would like to request that you change your microchip information on your pet.  If you adopted prior to 2006, you can call AVID and request a change in the chip registration (currently set up to Furry Friends Foundation).  The website for AVID is www.avidmicrochip.com, and the telephone number is 800-336-2843.  You will need the chip number, which you can get from your vet if you have your pet scanned there.  If you adopted after 2006, please email and let us know.  We will need to take care of making the changes for you.

Please note that we will still be participating in the following events. The proceeds will go towards placing and caring for our remaining animals:

*Angels with Tails (August 27) 12-5pm – Armitage Avenue between Sheffield
and Halsted.  We will have dogs and cats available to meet!  Please stop by!

*2nd Annual Rummage Sale (August 26-27)  9-5pm - 2122 W. Shakespeare Ave,
Chicago, IL.  Come on out to support us, and do a little (or a lot) of
shopping as well!  If you have any items to donate to the sale, please
contact k@ecogardens.com to arrange a drop off.

Again, we regret to have to pass along this information.

Thank you for your support over the years.

Sincerely,
The volunteers of Furry Friends Foundation

New column day

The new column is called Chasing the High, and it’s all about handling the crash of a new relationship.  We’ve all been there.  It sucks.  Which is why I wrote about it.

This has been such a jam-packed month.  Between working, writing, and trying to squeeze in every social obligation on the planet, I love to have a quiet evening at home.  This rarely happens.

I’ve been led to the conclusion that I might have to cut out some of the not-so-much fun freelance assignments.  There’s one that I have that I completely hate.  The client is unorganized, the topics totally suck, and every time I’m in the midst of a project, I find myself wondering why I’ve taken on the assigment.  The money’s not even that good.  But . . . it’s a good way to stay in the practice of writing when it’s forced, and writing on subjects that require a strategy, AND writing things that aren’t strictly based on my opinions or experiences.  Because, after all, who really gives a shit about my opinion?

And this whole JonBenet thing  . . . does this get crazier and crazier by the minute?

First, you’ve got this creepy little girl, who has always been depicted in a disturbing pageanty kind of way (and pageants creep me out in general), and then she is brutally murdered in her own home.

Naturally her parents are the leading suspects, but nobody has any real proof, so they have to live in a bubble with the media poking at them endlessly for 10 years, and they get the pleasure of seeing the occasional pictures of their daughter on ridiculous supermarket tabloids whenever there are no celebrity breakups to report.

THEN the mother dies of cancer, with no resolution about the death of her (previously over-exposed) daughter.  THEN this kooky guy, who has married not one, but TWO teenagers in the past, steps up and confesses while in a FOREIGN country — if you can call it a true confession.  I’ve only heard him say “I was with JonBenet at the time of her death,” which in crazy-speak, could mean that he was channeling her presence, or other such nincompoopery.

And NOW it turns out that he was in Alabama with his (underaged) family during the time of the murder.  WTF?????

With news items like this, no wonder the whole world is more excited about which member of Paris Hilton’s zoological habitat has decided to bite her.

So far this summer, I think the worst headline has been “Christie Brinkley’s husband cheats with teen.”  Not sure I’d recover from that one.

New column etc.

I’ve been a bad blogger lately.  Truthfully, I haven’t had the time — okay, really I haven’t had the energy.

Everyone’s on a mad dash to squeeze in the last bit of social activity in the summer, and it seems that I have something to do every night of the week.  Not that I’m complaining.  I love having an active social life.  It’s just that when you hang out on a nightly basis, there are things that you’re neglecting.  Housework being one.  I’m not even home long enough to let the cleaning people in.

More later . . . one of my social activities is calling!  :-)

New column about Stuff

Check out the new column (http://redeye.chicagotribune.com).  It’s all about Stuff, and how to retrieve it after a breakup.

I’ve been a bad blogger lately.  And it isn’t as though there’s nothing to write about.  There’s plenty.  It’s just that I haven’t stopped for five minutes to write about it.

For example, Jennifer Lopez has decided to pull out of her role in Dallas . . . which means that there’s more of a chance that I’ll see the movie when it releases.  Star Jones is planning to sue anyone who says that her marriage is on the rocks . . . which means that I’ll have to be more discreet about my Star-and-Al-bashing (yeah, right . . . like she’d waste energy suing me, of all people).

More later (I promise).  I have MUCH work to do!!

New column, and my missing MySpace page!

The new column released today.  It’s about going the extra mile for your significant other.  Go to the RedEye Site and check it out!

I seem to be missing my Myspace page.  All of a sudden, it’s been deleted, or I can’t log in, or something.  My apologies to everyone who’s looking for it!  I’m trying to straighten it out.
