Illness et al Well, to catch everyone up with all…

Illness et al

Well, to catch everyone up with all of my cryptic goings on over the last few days, everything is fine now, and this Christmas will likely not be “the Christmas that . . .” But, since there are about three weeks left until Christmas — and a LOT can happen over three weeks — I don’t want to be overly confident. Some things require a leap of faith, I guess. I’m not always the best with faith — I work more in tangibles, and while I wish a lot of things about this cryptic situation were different — i.e. wish it didn’t happen, wish I could be more trusting, wish that others had a history of being more trustworthy — I’ve decided to have fun, and hope that we’re on the same page.

On to the next thing . . . yesterday was column day. I wrote about the danger of too much baggage. Feel free to check it out.

But, when I woke up yesterday, I didn’t really care about the column release. Or the snow. In fact, it seems that I didn’t manage to fall asleep from the night before due to an intense pain in my abdomen that seemed to worsen during the middle of the night. It was so bad that I could barely move, stand, or sit up. I was afraid to eat, and it was a chore to get out of bed. I called in sick, which I hate to do.

I knew that pain. It brought back memories of food poisoning from several years earlier. That time it was from an undercooked turkey burger. This time, it was harder to detect the origin of the problem. We went to a Greek restaurant the night before, and I had broiled chicken and rice, which was very benign. The chicken was cooked all the way through, so it probably wasn’t that.

I only remember that, when I had it the first time, the BF that I had at the time was seriously unhelpful. I had to eat bland foods, and he couldn’t manage to make me a decent bowl of oatmeal. He tried, but failed miserably, and decided not to try again. That was the problem with him — he never really tried.

Anyhoo . . . so I made a doctor’s appointment. The BF — who was less than happy about a 7:30 am, whiny wakeup call — couldn’t take me because he was having car trouble, and my mother wouldn’t take me because she didn’t want to move the car. I guess those three inches of snow precluded her from driving. Whatever.

I called my doctor friend, who was concerned that I might have appendicitis, given the nature of my pain. She suggested that I prepare to be sent to the ER for a CAT scan, just in case. So, I took a lot of reading material, and made the slow drive to the doctor’s office.

As it turns out, it was either a bacterial infection (which is what I thought), or a problem with my kidney. They ran a few tests, but the bad news is that, if it’s bacterial, it has to run its course. I was told that Tylenol will be my best friend over the next few days, and that I should follow the BRAT diet — consisting of bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. It’s a good thing I love toast.

I feel exponentially better today, which is great, because I’ve been invited to Jen’s house for dinner tonight, and I intend to eat whatever she cooks because I will be SO happy to see her. For some reason, I don’t think she’ll be making anything on the BRAT diet. :-) At least I hope not.
